Before you take the plunge this summer, please review the following water safety tips. They’ll keep everyone protected as you dive into SUMMER fun.
Supervise children at play. Assign a dedicated “Water Watcher” who avoids distractions like phones, reading, or alcohol. Drownings can occur silently and quickly.
Understand how swimsuit color choices affect visibility in the water (see graphic).
Monitor conditions, including the weather forecast, before you set out to swim. Get everyone out of the water if lightning is predicted. Be aware of underwater obstacles and don’t allow diving in shallow or unknown depths.
Make sure to wear sunscreen and reapply regularly.
Enroll children and adults in swimming lessons to improve confidence and safety in the water. Even strong swimmers should take breaks to avoid fatigue.
Remember that swimming aids and flotation devices do not prevent drowning. They should be tested for safety before use. Wear properly fitted lifejackets in open water like lakes and the ocean.
Stay smart by reviewing these reminders to help your whole family keep cool and splash safely.
